The Remembrance Quilt The Remembrance Quilt

November 2000

The project which began earlier this year on Tony's birthday is now complete. Thank you to everyone who sent a little something for the quilt square that will eventually be added to The Remembrance Quilt. I have sent the completed square to Bob and Martha, and after they have spent some time with it, they will be forwarding it to Richard, who will be responsible for taking the square to the Hospice of Northern Virginia. I'm not sure how long it will take for the square to actually be added to the quilt, but anyone who has questions can call and speak with Sherri Showalter, the project's coordinator, at (703) 525-7070.

The completed quilt square includes notes from many of those dear to Tony. In design it differs only slightly from the original description. The white 13 by 13 square has 28 black music notes on it, one for each year since Tony was born. To me this pattern symbolizes not only chance but also freedom, release, or letting go. A piece of colored ribbon is sewn to each note's head, and a note to Tony is tied to each note by the ribbon. Being a student of literature in addition to music, I like the double entendre of the tied notes because in music, a note is tied when you want to hold on to it longer.
