Matt Baker
Graduation 1994
Tony was the first person I met at the University of Maryland, and
he always said I was the first person he met there, too. That was
at freshman orientation, 1990. Goodness, we were young and green
back then. At least I was.
A few random flashes of reminiscence:
- Singing a duet version of "When Doves Cry" with Tony while
strolling across the Washington University campus with Jen
of the Greenleafs.
- Cutting generics practice with Tony to go see "Phish" in concert.
Probably pissed the group off, but it was a hell of a bonding
experience. Tony was nuts for singer/guitarist Trey Anastasio, he
just kept saying "He *is* the man."
- Taking Robin Sawyer's "Human Sexuality" class together. We had
planned for some time to do that when we were seniors. We missed
the in-class film on female ejaculation because of a generics gig - now *that* was loyalty!
- Visiting Tony for the first time since he became sick. That was
during my spring break in March '97. We spent the afternoon playing
catch-up and laughing. He looked so different - yet there was no
denying, this was definitely Tony Went, true and gold.
