I remember the first time I met Tony Went. He was a geeky-looking 15 year old kid
working the spotlight at a talent show during my freshman year in high school. At that
talent show, I butchered a White Snake song (I was a 14 year old boy trying to sing, so
you figure it out), but Tony still told me that we sounded great. Over the years,
though, as we became friends, he never let me forget my little mishap, especially when
that song would come on the radio. He'd turn up the radio, look over at me, and make his
voice crack at the spot mine had that fateful night. Kind of ironic that 2 years later,
when we were both acting in a production of Bye-Bye Birdie, Tony got the role of Harvey
Johnson, whose voice is supposed to crack during "The Telephone Song". I guess thanks
to me he had some good practice. It's been 6 years since I last saw Tony. We did keep
in contact over e-mail, but that trailed off over the years. Although we weren't in
contact, Tony was very much in my prayers after I heard about his disease. I was
convinced that he would beat it, but I guess the Lord had other plans. I'm sorry I
didn't get to say good-bye, but I'm sure I'll see him again. In the meantime, thanks
for the memories, Tony.
